March Favourites

I mentioned this already briefly in my last monthly favourites, though I still haven't come round to making a proper review about it, but these things take time. I don't necessarily think it's the most versatile palette as far as combinations go and Nude'Tude is better in that respect, but you can create a nice warm coppery smoky eye, a light warm brown look or a purple combination - basically it's an expansion of the Nude'Tude with all the shades you might have missed in that one. I think that TheBalm has some of the best eyeshadows out there. They are very smooth, pigmented and wear best out of all I own. My favourite combination in this palette is surprisingly Flirty with Friendly, a pink-purple combination that looks a lot more neutral taupe-ish on my lids. You can see it in my Wet n Wild Megalast lipsticks and Milani Amore in Gorgeous posts.

I already wrote a lot about this powder in my latest New in, when I just started using it and after a few more weeks of testing it in combination with my foundations, I think I can say this one of the best finishing powders I've tried if you want to set the makeup and avoid the powdery finish or you, like me, experience that almost every powder completely ruins your makeup as its wearing off by basically clumping the foundation bits together and emphasizing pores. This one doesn't do that. It's a radiance boosting powder, so should work similarly as Hourglass Ambient powders and Bourjois' Java powder, but it's multi-coloured, so it promises to also enhance the natural skin tone, but I notice nothing like that and it's just a transparent powder. It looks very light on the skin, like there is nothing on, but it takes away the shine and doesn't look powdery matte. I'm not confident it'll hold back at lot of oil, but my skin isn't oily, so I can't say that for sure. Another star of this product is the packaging which is so adorable and handy because of the big mirror in the back.

I raved extensively about this concealer and even crowned it as my co-all-time favourite concealer along with Maybelline's The Eraser. Initially I was turned off by the unfortunate shade range that excludes Snow White complexions like mine, but the scarily orange-looking lightest shade somehow manages to blend in well and not look so out of place. The reason I love this concealer is because it looks so natural. I'm prepared to sacrifice full coverage for a product that doesn't look heavy and cakey on my skin, a problem that tends to happen to me a lot for some reason, and this one delivers. It has such a spectacular natural "of course I'm not wearing any makeup" finish, has about a medium coverage and a nice light formula. I even wear it sometimes as a foundation and I think it looks better than all the proper foundations I currently own.

Maybe I'm being boring by dragging this lip colour in my favourites again, but it's become my staple looks-good-with-anything shade a.k.a. my second Nude-ist colour. It's about the same in tone as the latter, so a muted rose shade that looks so polished and modern, but it's about a shade or two darker. My lips tend to disappear if I don't wear a non-nude lipstick since they are pale and this is the shade that defines them, but isn't too bright. The formula of it is a lovely matte one and it's affordable. Truly a great everyday shade for my skintone.

Ok, the termo a.k.a colour changing effect is a just not working on me, which is fine, not a big deal at all because the reason why I love this nail polish, is the shade. It's a medium, slightly taupe grey that just works so well with my skin tone. I call it a pretty, "weird neutral", not a classic nail polish colour, but one that somehow just works and looks great on the nails.

From an unusual neutral to a classic red. I've been in a retro mood in the last part of the month and I started wearing my hair in retro curls again, so what else would I wear on my nails other than a red nail polish. This one is my only blue-toned one, which I prefer to my orange reds and it's the kind of shade that makes you appear like you give a damn in looking professional and classy.

I like this purely for the scent. While it's quite a classic Dove scent, it does have a tinge of a strawberry scent mixed in it and not in that obnoxious fake way that I hate, which is in every strawberry scented product. I use it to refresh my hair and not to absorb oil, since I don't have any, but it does make my hair lighter and more voluminous like any dry shampoo I've tried so far. How well it would perform on oily hair, I can't say, but it leaves less residue than Batiste, so it might not absorb as much oil.

This and Bourjois' concealer are the uncontested winners of these favourites. I've been a fan of Paco Rabanne fragrance for many years, but this one is such an untypical scent for this brand. You won't find their almost signature notes of patchouli and pepper in this, instead it's a more mellow floral vanilla mix. On my skin the first burst is pure gourmand heaven that reminds me of Monte dessert (on the paper I smell predominantly jasmine) and it then develops into a jasmine-vanilla-woodsy mix. The lasting power is excellent, which is not that surprising given the notes and the fact it's an eau de parfum. I can smell it faintly at the end of the day and it lasts so well on clothes. The bottle is outstandingly gorgeous to me, though I wish I had the 50 or 80 ml, which has a rose gold laurel leaf design instead of just glass. I just loved making a review for this fragrance, it's one of my favourite posts I did, since I love the ancient Greco-roman world.

Notes
Top: green mandarin, water jasmine, ginger flower
Heart: vanilla, salt
Base: sandalwood, cashmere and ambergris.

Too Faced Chocolate Bar Eyeshadow Palette

As hyped up and popular the Chocolate Bar palette is ever since its launch, I never considered actually buying it and that's purely because of the price. After I got TheBalm's Nude'Tude I didn't plan on buying another eyeshadow palette for a really long time, but I needed a proper treat for my birthday and one night I just decided to order it. And boy, am I glad I did. The raves are so justified and I can easily see why so many people put this palette into their last year's annual favourites. The shade selection is fantastic and the quality of the shades is brilliant as well. It may be expensive, but I don't regret buying it for a second.

Texture: All the shimmer/satin shades apart from the Candied Violet are buttery, incredibly pigmented and blend so well. The mattes are great too, more buttery than Urban Decay's, but they perform equally well. Candied Violet feels drier to the touch and it performed poorly from the start, however, now that I've swatched it properly, so gone through the top layer, it performs great. A similar thing happened with Strawberry Bon Bon, which swatched chalky from the start, but is now working just fine. In general the eyeshadows are more buttery than Urban Decay's and TheBalm's.

Colours: There are 16 colours in the palette, ranging from mattes to satins and shimmer shades. The shade selection ranges from chocolate browns, gold, greenish old gold, burgundies and purples. Black is missing and I would also add an even darker matte brown, like Sleek in theBalm's Nude'Tude, but otherwise, I love the shade selection. I love every colour and all are very wearable, I've even worn Candied Violet, which not a shade I typical wear. I have very little dupes for these in my collection, which is a bit sad considering I've been a beauty blogger for over five years and a beauty enthusiast for well over a decade.

Gilded Ganache - a shimmery green old gold shade. It's similar to Bronze Goddess by L'Oreal in the discontinued Infallible range, but less gold and green. It looks stunning on its own and I also I love combining it with Creme Brulee for an antiqued gold look.
White Chocolate - a matte skin tone shade. The perfect base and blending colour.
Milk Chocolate - a matte medium cool brown. Great crease colour, but quite a brown choice for something that fakes a shadow.
Black Forest Truffle - a shimmery brown burgundy. Finally a company that made such a shade right, all the rest I've tried weren't pigmented enough. I combine it mostly with Amaretto.
Triple Fudge  - a matte deep cool brown with some green tones. Great for deepening the outer corners, but I would make this shade darker.
Salted Caramel - a matte medium peachy brown. Very smooth and looks great on the lids in combination with blue eyes.
Marzipan - a shimmery light beige-peachy shade. Darker than Sin from UD's Naked or theBalm's Stand-offish, but with a similar effect on the lids. Great as a lid colour and as an intense inner corner highlight.
Semi-Sweet - a matte medium chocolate brown. A lovely darker shade for the crease and outer corners.

Strawberry Bon Bon - a matte pastel pink. Soft, but quite sheer, so it works as a blending out colour.
Candied Violet - a medium violet shade with purple shimmer. This one was very deceiving from the start because it swatched sheer, but then I did a test with one eye bare and the other with a cream eyeshadow base. To my surprise I managed to build up a fully opaque layer of colour on both sides with no problems. It's a very pretty purple that looks even more interesting because of the red shimmer.
Amaretto - a gorgeous satin reddish brown shade. One of my absolute favourites and crazy pigmented. Looks great with green and blue eyes.
Hazelnut - a satin medium brown shade. Very similar in terms of quality to Amaretto, so amazing and one of my favourites. Love wearing this on the lids.
Creme Brulee - the perfect gold shade that doesn't look orange on me, instead it's much more old gold/bronze like. Undoubtedly my favourite gold shade so far so my colouring. Quality is like at Amaretto and Hazelnut.
Haute Chocolate - a darker version of Hazelnut shade. Another great quality one and one of my favourites. It use it mostly in the outer corners.
Cherry Cordial - a satin burgundy shade. Similar to Sexy in TheBalm's Nude'Tude, which I slightly prefer to this one, though both are great.
Champagne Truffle - a satin light gold shade which is an excellent highlighter. It looks more pink in the pan, but the shimmer is gold.

White Chocolate as a base, Hazelnut on the lid and under the lower lashline, Haute Chocolate in the outer corner and in the outer third of the lower lashline, Champagne truffle in the inner corners. The eyeliner is Stila Stay All Day Waterproof and mascara Maybelline The Sensational Waterproof. On the cheeks Max Factor Creme Puff blush in Lavish Mauve and on the lips Sleek Matte Me Birthday Suit.

Staying power: They last all day on the lids, but they do sometimes crease if I don't use a primer because some shades are so buttery. In that respect I actually find TheBalms' are better. With a primer they work great. I use theBalm's Put a Lid on it eyeshadow primer, but mostly I use a cream eyeshadow as a base to intensify them and make them last all day.

White Chocolate as a base, Amaretto on the lid, Black Cherry Truffle in the outer corners, Champagne Truffle in the inner corners. Eyeliner again Stila, blush Max Factor Creme Puff in Lavish Mauve and on the lips Golden Rose Velvet Matte 12.

Scent: The first couple of days I could not smell any chocolate, but now I do. It really does smell faintly like chocolate and cocoa. So far everyone has noticed the scent, even though I haven't told them that its scented.

Packaging: The packaging is metal with a magnetic closing system. It has a decently sized mirror inside. It's bulkier than my other palettes, but it's the only one made from metal.

Price and availability: Mine is from Beauty Bay for 54.70 € (41.75 GBP). I hear Beauty Bay will now stop selling Too Faced, which is just the stupidest move ever. French and Polish Sephora ship Too Faced to Slovenia or you can go to Italy's Sephora. I'm not sure where else you can get this brand.

I just adore this palette. I has a wonderful selection of shades that are so completely up my alley. Maybe I'm missing a taupe shade or two, but I have them in other palettes anyway. I love how pigmented these are, since I have zero patience when it comes to application and they blend so well. This may well be one of the best purchases I have made in this year.

Have a great day!

Essence Thermo Nail Polish 05 The Ice Is Melting

I posted about another similar shade by Essence called Serendipity a week ago and this is again another greyish colour. As it turns out, I love this one more than Serendipity and its quickly become one of my favourite nail polishes ever. As the name thermo suggests, it's not just a regular nail polish, but one at which the colour changes with temperature, or at least it should.

The Ice is Melting is a medium, taupe grey. Nothing much more to say about it here, other than it's a typical modern minky shade that's like a new twist on the nude trend and it's a weird colour to wear on the nails, but is somehow just works so well. I like that it doesn't have much violet tones in it, since my skin tone tends to emphasize that hue.

The formula is very thin and sheer, so at least three coats are needed for full opacity, but it applies evenly without looking too thick like Serendipity, which is not the easiest gel formula to work with. It's supposed to change colour to a more purple shade depending on the temperature, but I tried it with cold and hot water, and surprise, surprise it doesn't work, but I don't care. I found it works for some people, check this German blog Cidooos Life for a picture of the change. The brush is thin, which I actually appreciate, since my nails are quite narrow, but it's not such a speedy application as at Essence's The Gel nail polishes.

I got mine in Müller for 1.49 €.

Have a great day!

Yanquina Waterproof Eyeliner

This is by far the cheapest eyeliner and makeup product in general that I ever bought. It was less than 0.80 cents on AliExpress, so I it was "quite a splurge". Actually, I'll shallowly admit, that it was the polka dot design that got me. It is not a reliable eyeliner by any means, but for the first week it performed excellently and just as its much more expensive competition. Of course, it didn't last long, but I'm content with it considering the price.

The nib is one of the smallest I tried, so very precise, however, also very stiff with almost zero movement, which makes it harder to fix mistakes, so it's not my favourite. In the first days, it worked fabulously, it was super black, saturated with product and also long-lasting (I have normal eyelids). I started laughing the first time I tried it because it performed so well, comparable to my other liners and I found it ironic that it was a less than a tenth of a price. But as the days followed the felt tip applicator dried up fast. Not completely, but just so I couldn't do the flicks any more, they just looked see-through. Storing it upside down for a few days, brings it back to life, but it quickly depletes again. So it's not the most reliable product, but since it's so cheap, you can get a couple and switch them up, though none will last long.

Picture taken after about two weeks since I got it, it performed better in the first week.

For 0.80 € you could do far worse. Actually, I've had worse for 10 €. I think this is a great liner if you want to experiment and you're trying eyeliner for the first time, but it's not the most reliable one. I got it from this seller and you can read the review of my fellow blogger Ana from Beautysaur, at who I saw this liner first, here. By the way, it's now close to two months old and it still has colour, so I can still use it for a more smudgy look.

Have a great day!

Paco Rabanne Olympea

Pretty much every time Paco Rabanne releases a new fragrance, it becomes an instant hit. They seem to have a knack for making fragrances that appeal to a majority of people and I'm one of them. Their Black XS was my first signature fragrance and I wore it throughout my late teens, I liked Lady Million as well and One Million is by far the best men fragrance ever - I hooked up two of my male friends on the latter. Olympea intrigued me from the moment I saw the press releases. I have this fascination with the ancient Greco-Roman world and culture since childhood, so the ads and the bottle are just gorgeous to me. The moment Olympea hit the shelves I was sold and it was love at first spray, but I shuddered at the original price of it in our drugstores. I never buy fragrance there, unless there is at least -30 % discount, so I promised myself to postpone getting it until I find a good deal online. I buy about 90% of my fragrances that way, usually a couple of years after the original release when the prices really drop.

Olympea is a very untraditional Paco Rabanne scent as far as I'm concerned. They tend to make more spicy scents, peppery mostly and they always include patchouli, but you won't find either in Olympea. Firstly I'll say that this fragrance develops a lot different on my skin than on the testing paper. It starts with this gorgeous sweet burst of a gourmand scent that is eerily similar to the Monte dessert. It's a hazelnut-chocolate-vanilla mix and I swear that initial burst is pure heaven on my skin. There is only vanilla in this fragrance from those notes, but somehow it creates such a scent together with my skin. It smelled a lot more floral on paper, so that was a great surprise to me. Close to skin I can also smell a more citrusy note from the start, the green mandarin I assume and I can also detect some more neutral woodsy elements. It then sometimes transforms into a predominately jasmine fragrance, but a more toned down version than Lush's Lust and Thierry Mugler's Alien. However, sometimes, I can barely smell any jasmine and it's just a simple, warm vanilla-woodsy-cashmere scent. I prefer the latter, since jasmine is not my favourite note in fragrances. The lasting power is excellent, which is not that surprising given the notes and the fact it's an eau de parfum. I can smell it faintly at the end of the day and it lasts so well on clothes. The scent itself is relatively strong, but not overpowering.

Notes
Top: green mandarin, water jasmine, ginger flower
Heart: vanilla, salt
Base: sandalwood, cashmere and ambergris.

More about the notes and additional reviews on Fragrantica.

The bottle is stunningly beautifully, but there is a difference between the 30 ml and the 50 ml/80 ml. The latter two have these beautiful rose gold laurel crown design and the 30 ml has just shaped laurel leaves out of glass. I think that if you've already put so much effort into a design, do all the bottles the same. I would prefer to have those bottles if you're deciding to buy this fragrance, it's just more eye-catching. I love the entire peachy colour scheme and the wings on the box, I'll surely keep it as decoration.

Mine is from Fragrance Direct, an online shop where I've already ordered a few bits before (among other things a Mac Mineralized Skin Finish Natural when they had it). They have some great deals that include fragrance (such as the new Escada Agua Del Sol and Giorgio Armani Si Rose Signature), makeup (W7 In The Mood Natural Nudes Eye Palette 3,21 €, Rimmel Apocalips Matte Lip Lacquer 2,56 €, also a lot of the already discontinued products if you're looking for your favourites - for example L'Oreal Colour Infallible Eyeshadow 2,56 €), nail polishes (Essie's for 3,84 €, Rimmel's Velvet Mattes 1,93 €) hair care (Orofluido Hair & Body Limited Edition Beauty Set 100ml 23,11 €) and body care (The Body Shop Chocomania Body Butter 50ml 3,84 €). You can find their shipping costs here.

Have a great day!

Essence The Gel Nail Polish 37 Serendipity

Serendipity has been on my wishlist for the longest time, but I always either just forgot to pick it up or intentionally avoided it because I don't want to spend money on a nail polish that I may not wear often, even though it's cheap. I don't have many similar shades, since I mostly stick to mints, reds and nudes, but I loving these modern greyish type of colours lately.

Serendipity is a mix of a pastel violet and grey. On me the violet tones are prevailing, which is expected considering my skin tone always emphasizes anything purple. It's a lovely colour that has both a autumnal and spring vibe, and it looks very modern, as well as polished on the nails.

The formula is a gel one, but very thick and more difficult to control that others I've tried (including shades from this line). It needs two coats for an even finish. It's opaque with one, but not even, so it needs fixing. I can't apply this without making a proper mess, but I just clean it up later. The wide brush doesn't help either as it's already a bit too big for my nails. The finish is typically nicely glossy as at other gel formulas.

I got mine in Müller for 1.69 €.

Wet n Wild MegaLast Lip Color

I've known about Megalast lipsticks almost since I discovered the online beauty community. These have been popular for so many years and I've come close to ordering on many occasions, but stopped short every time. I finally had the chance to try these myself and I got six shades, which are a mix of the original selection and the updated one.

Texture: I've heard good and bad things about these, but I did not expect them to be so good. They very, very thick, but still creamy enough and particularly the light shades apply evenly in one swipe. I keep them in a fairly warm room, so that might be the reason for their good performance and I've experienced no problems with any tugging or chalky-dry texture, so these work great for me. However, I finally had a chance to give it my friend to try, who is more sensitive to dry textures and she says these are so drying to her (it still applied smoothly. Shade Just Peachy by the way), so I can definitely see why some people describe them as dry. They are thick and don't have such a smooth feeling texture like Jordana's Matte lipsticks for example, so they end up being on the heavy side and slightly sticky on the lips. My lips are never dry and these are fine to me, but if you're concerned these will dry your lips, I suggest reading more reviews and then decide based on all different opinions. I should probably just stop assessing the dryness factor at lipsticks, since I started considering myself as a very wrong person to do it. The finish varies between the shades, but it's mostly satin or satin-matte with a slight creamy sheen. Purty Persimmon has the shiniest finish.

A lot of the shades are frequently compared to Mac colours and described as dupes. I have a very high standard of what constitutes a dupe, mainly because I am so pale that minor differences show up more on me and I don't think these are quite there, but they are very, very close. I have pictures with each shade on one half of the lips under individual reviews of the shades, but here are side by side swatches on my arm, which is approximately NC/W10.

 BARE IT ALL

Bare it All is a beige nude shade that is a alleged dupe for Mac's Velvet Teddy. I was concerned this will look brown on me, but it's very wearable and I think can pull it off just fine. It's not chalky-looking despite the fact it's light and it's creamy, so I can apply it in one swipe. Not mine comparison swatch with Velvet Teddy here.

JUST PEACHY

Just Peachy is a beautiful light peachy-pink shade. I was very worried about this one looking white-based orange, but it's seriously so pretty on the lips. It has just the right amount of pink and that is very rare when it comes to peachy-pinks. I assume that it will look more pink on medium skin tones, also more white-base-looking. I've worn this one most out of all and it wears off ok. It's doesn't leave a stain, but since it's a light shade, you can't really see that it fades uneven.

PURTY PERSIMMON

Purty Persimmon is an orange red and a very similar shade to Mac's Lady Danger. I have the side by side comparison below. The formula is different than at others, but this is one of the shades that was added to the line later. It's sheerer and it has a more shiny finish, but it's easy to get a fully opaque coat of colour with a couple of layers.

Purty Persimmon on the left and Lady Danger on the right. Purty Persimmon is sheerer, less pigmented and less matte, but they are close enough.

SUGAR PLUM FAIRY

Sugar Plum Fairy is a dark purple pink. It's probably the most known shade in the Megalast range, mostly due to being dubbed as "The" dupe for MAC's Rebel. I have a side by side comparison of both below. It's again very pigmented with a satin-matte finish and I don't find it drying, but I was once advised not to get this shade because it's super thick. While that is indeed the case, I don't find it hard to work with on me, but the application isn't as smooth as at other shades. This one leaves a very strong stain behind, which is the best I've seen in any product ever, as it's very even and fades nicely. This shade tends to look very different of various skin tones. On me it leans more strongly to purple, but I've seen it looking more pink on a lot of other people.

Sugar Plum Fairy on the left and Rebel on the right. Sugar Plum Fairy is more purple and matte.

RAVIN' RAISIN

Ravin' Rasin is a medium cool greyish purple shade. I'm not feeling this one on me, it's simply too purple and draining grey, but I've seen swatches of some people on who this shade looked a lot more mauve-pink.

 BLACK CHERRY

Cherry Bomb is a dark vampy burgundy red and very similar to Mac's Diva, only even a bit darker. If you're looking for a cheap vampy shade, look no further.

Black Cherry on the left and Diva on the right. Black Cherry is darker, less red.

Staying power: At the lightest two shades you can't really see that well how they wear off, but it's slightly patchy. No biggie, though. Dark shades leave an intense stain. Sugar Plum Fairy leaves a very intense and even stain, which looks very beautiful, but pretty much all such shades leave a stain, just like Rebel and its other supposed dupes.

Scent: These have not definitive scent. It looks like they just kept the original scent, which varies from shade to shade and not try to cover it up.

Packaging: If I thought the packaging of Jordana lipsticks was terrible, this is even worse. The cheap plastic that scratches very easily, the tightly closed cap that requires a lot of force for it to open, which in turn dents the lipstick since it doesn't go all the way into a tube. These are messy in no time. You'd think that after so many years on the market, they'd change them.

Price and availability: Mine are from Click2Chic where they cost 2.99 € (I got them to swatch for their website). I think price is about the same at other places. Some Croatian DM's have these, but because the packaging of these lipsticks is so bad, the testers are very messy. For international readers, online I know of nonpareilboutique.com and Beautyjoint.com.

Have a great day!
